Medical Efficacy of Moringa Oleifera in the treatment of ESRD?

I heard over a local radio station that Moringa could indeed cure ESRD even those patients already undergoing dialysis. Is this true? Which part of the plant would be used? How is it used?

Whoever said it could cure anything was misleading….

I did a lit review for the last few minutes, and out of everything that turned up (All of ONE study pertained to renal function) – - it appears to be as good at preventing kidney stones as the drug cystone – - in rats.
There has never been a human trial on this remedy for a kidney condition.

Thats a far cry from curing anything, especially end stage renal disease – I would be leary of giving a herbal extract to anyone with ESRD, simply by virtue of the fact that you could be stressing an organ that is already on its last leg.

Anyhow, here is the abstract of study

In India, drumstick (Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae)) is commonly used as a phytotherapeutic agent. The effect of oral administration of aqueous and alcoholic extract of Moringa oleifera root-wood on calcium oxalate urolithiasis has been studied in male Wistar albino rats. Ethylene glycol feeding resulted in hyperoxaluria as well as increased renal excretion of calcium and phosphate. Supplementation with aqueous and alcoholic extract of Moringa oleifera root-wood significantly reduced the elevated urinary oxalate, showing a regulatory action on endogenous oxalate synthesis. The increased deposition of stone forming constituents in the kidneys of calculogenic rats was also significantly lowered by curative and preventive treatment using aqueous and alcoholic extracts. The results indicate that the root-wood of Moringa oleifera is endowed with antiurolithiatic activity.

Be especially careful when considering remedies for those who are weakened by illness.

Feedstock for Biodiesel

An Australian company named Mission Biofuels has taken it upon themselves to set up a feedstock for biodiesel production. Tree Oils India Limited also known as TOIL for short was a company established in 2003 to develop environment friendly and sustainable energy systems. These systems are based on plant sources and Tree Oils Limited mainly manufactures their oil from trees that are not edible like Jatropha curcas and Pongamia pinnata.

For the company to be able to produce tree based oils in a great amount, TOIL decided to establish a 120 acre R&D farm in India back in 2003. The plantation consists of 60 acres of Pongamia also known as (Indian Beech), 40 acres of Jatropha also known as (Physic Nut), 5 acres of Moringa (Drumstick), 2 acres of Azadirachta (Neem), 2 acres of Azardica (Neem), 1 acre of Sapindus (Soap nut) and 1 acre of Simarouba (Paradise).

They have great variety and their focus is to develop a farming system based on integrated tree based oils that farmers can be contracted to do hopefully within the next five years. However they are not stopping there TOIL is planning to set up a 2 tonne per day capacity biodiesel plant, dependent on the availability that they have.

This would be a great place for farmers and a production plant to do well because India is a highly populated country and a family of farmers could take care of a great size of land quite easily. The way there infrastructure is set up significantly reduces costs, not only that however most of the farming that is done in India is organic by default. They use cow dung as manure for the Jatropha tree, and cow dung is something that plays a huge factor and plays a difference in low death rate of saplings, good yield, less pests.
